Long before Pokémon, there was Digital Devil Story (Megami Tensei, 1987). DDS is not a children's game, it's as mature as Google would allow it to be (it literally puts the player to talk to Demons!) It's completely ads free and, although it has a lot of perks that can be purchased, all contents are obtainable for free (given enough time). The stories (there are several) are interesting and cover several topics. There are different gameplays in different scenarios, from battles to dungeon-crawling and PvP, and also a separated AR system just for Demon chatting. The graphics are gorgeous and very creative. It only works online (to avoid cheating hackers), as every action must sync to server, which gets saturated some times. Overall, it's a lot more rewarding than other games, in the sense that it actually makes the player want to get back and see what's new, which Demons have been added to the Compendium.

I've been playing this game from year 1 if I remember right, it's truly one of my favorite games. The story has come a long way and over time I've collected a lot of 5 star demons and been able to unlock a lot of their abilities. A lot of features have been added and the story finally finished(?) though maybe they'll do more. I haven't finished the last chapter yet but the story has truely lived up to the company's name, keeping you right on the edge of your seat. It was very enjoyable.
